A Country House in Charlton, Saratoga County

SETTING: Charlton occupies the southwestern corner of Saratoga County. Incorporated as a township in 1792, its first permanent settlers arrived in the 1770s. The entire hamlet is now a National Historic District.

THE STORY: The house was built by John Taylor, a Revolutionary War soldier who served at a nearby blockhouse, which was built to protect the settlers from marauding British regulars and their Indian allies. Commanding the Americans at the blockhouse was Lt. Pliny Moore, who, as it happens, was the great great grandfather of the current owner.
