Around & About Lake George: Friday, June 17, 2011
This weekend is Father’s Day – so do something nice for the father (or father figure) in your life. If your dad is anything like mine, it will be something like letting him do what he wants and no complaining. For my father – that would be…golf. Hooray!
But if you want to do something for – or with – your dad there is quite a bit going on in Lake George this weekend and coming week.
There are quite a few events just for Father’s Day this weekend – specials and events. You can do something on the cheap (or free) with your family this weekend and still be in the good graces of your parents. The Adirondack Winery is having a free wine tasting tomorrow and Sunday. But if your dad is more a beer person than a wine person, the Saratoga Brewfest is tomorrow, from 3 to 7, at the Ellms Family Farm out in Ballston Spa. (If you don’t have tickets, they’re $50 at the door – a little pricey, maybe, but I’m sure your dad is worth it).
And if your father eschews spirits for thrill, there are a few thrillers on tap in the near future. There is another downhill mountain bike race tomorrow at West Mountain, and a warrior race in the same local both Saturday and Sunday – with a wind tunnel, a helicopter, fire and more! For those who find motors and classic cars most exciting, Old Forge is having their annual Father’s Day car show all weekend – why not check it out?
For those who enjoy the quieter things, the Lake Placid Film Forum is this weekend – take a look at the schedule of events, as there is something going on pretty much any time of day. Or there is the Fiddle Jam at Long Lake town hall from noon to four – $7 for adults – though I don’t know if I’d call the fiddle jam “quiet.”
The food lovers in Lake George will be in heaven this week – Restaurant Week is kicking off on Monday. I won’t list all of the participating restaurants here, but check out where you can go until the 24th to get a three-course meal for only $20.11! Best deal in town, I’m sure.
Another big kick-off – but this time, for the theater lovers – is the Adirondack Theater Festival in Glens Falls. It begins Wednesday the 22nd with “The K of D” – “a summertime ghost story about a lonely girl with a lethal skill.” Interesting…and potentially very creepy!
But perhaps the two biggest events coming up are waiting until the weekend. Centurion Cycling is coming to Lake George to preview the event and the course, and Summerfest is finally here – Shepard Park, all day next Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Get ready for a great summer celebration!
